What did we learn from week 1?

FSU 

Despite a promising 2023 campaign, Florida State's 2024 season began with a disappointing loss to Georgia Tech in week 0. The Seminoles' struggles continued in week 1, with an unexpected home defeat against Boston College. This 0-2 conference start has raised questions about the programs direction.

The losses, both of which were nationally televised, have put a spotlight on Florida State's early-season challenges. As the team seeks to rebound, the pressure is mounting to regain the momentum they enjoyed last year.

FSU, a team known for its successful use of the transfer portal in 2023, has faced challenges in replicating that formula this season. The team's quarterback situation, in particular, has been a point of concern. Coach Mike Norvel brought in DJ Uiagalelei from Oregon State to lead the offense, hoping for a seamless transition.

DJ Uiagalelei's performance in the Seminoles' first two games has fallen short of expectations. His accuracy and decision-making have been inconsistent. Uiagalelei completed 19 of 27 passes for 193 yards against Georgia Tech and 21 of 42 for 272 yards against Boston College. His struggles, including missed reads and protection breakdowns, have contributed to the team's disappointing start.

Uiagalelei's struggles have been compounded by the performance of the offensive line and wide receivers. The Seminoles' offense has struggled to generate yards, particularly on the ground. In their first two games, Florida State totaled 291 yards of offense against Georgia Tech and 293 yards against Boston College, with just 98 rushing yards and 21 rushing yards. The lack of a consistent running game has limited play-action opportunities for Uiagalelei. Additionally, the wide receivers have dropped multiple passes, hindering the team's passing attack.

The Seminoles have a bye week to regroup and evaluate their performance. Coach Mike Norvel will face a significant challenge as he seeks to address the team's issues and prepare for a challenging schedule that includes matchups against Miami, Clemson, and Notre Dame.

Florida

The recent home loss to rival Miami, resulting in a 41-17 defeat, has intensified speculation about the future of Billy Napier's tenure as Florida's head coach. This performance, one of the most disappointing home losses for the Gators in recent memory, has raised questions about his ability to lead the program.

Despite preseason optimism from Billy Napier, who emphasized the team's increased detail, talent, and preparation, the Gators have struggled to meet expectations. The recent loss to Miami highlights the challenges the program continues to face.

The Gators faced significant challenges in all facets of the game against Miami. The offensive line struggled to establish a running game and protect the quarterback, while the defensive line had difficulty generating pressure on Cam Ward. These deficiencies contributed to Miami's dominance throughout the contest.

The Gators face a daunting schedule, including the toughest conference in college football. With SEC play beginning in a week, Florida will need to make significant adjustments to improve their performance.   

Clemson & UGA 

Georgia continued its dominance in college football with a convincing victory over Clemson in the season opener. After a competitive first half, the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to extend their regular-season win streak to 40 games. Georgia's combination of a stout defense and explosive offense has solidified its position as a top contender.

Despite a strong defensive performance, Clemson's offense faced challenges against Georgia's talented defense. The Tigers generated only 188 total yards of offense, including a modest 46 rushing yards. The game's outcome was significantly influenced by Clemson's offensive struggles.

Dabo Swinney has faced criticism for his approach to the transfer portal at Clemson. Despite not fully utilizing the portal, the Tigers possess a talented roster capable of better performances, particularly on offense. While the loss to Georgia, a team with an elite defense, can be partially attributed to the opponent's strength, the expectation at Clemson remains high, and the team should strive for more consistent success against top-tier competition.

Clemson has a history of success, having previously won multiple national and conference championships. Under Dabo Swinney, the program has demonstrated its ability to compete at the highest level of college football. However, the evolving landscape of the sport has highlighted the need for potential adjustments to the team's coaching philosophy. 

Clemson has an opportunity to regroup against Appalachian State before diving into ACC play. The team possesses the talent to achieve a successful season, but the quarterback's performance and the effectiveness of the playmakers on offense will be crucial factors. Dabo Swinney will need to make necessary adjustments to address the offensive struggles and position Clemson for a potential ACC championship and playoff berth.

Oregon

Despite preseason expectations placing Oregon among the top contenders for the Big Ten title and College Football Playoff, their season opener against Idaho was not without its challenges. While the Ducks ultimately secured a 24-14 victory, their performance raised questions about their readiness to meet the high expectations set for them.

Oregon's offense faced difficulties throughout the game, leading to a tense fourth quarter. Idaho's touchdown narrowed the score to 14-17, creating a moment of uncertainty for Ducks fans. While Oregon ultimately responded with a late touchdown to secure the victory, the performance fell short of the team's high expectations.

The offensive line's performance was a significant concern in Oregon's season opener. Coach Dan Lanning will undoubtedly prioritize addressing these issues during the week. While the Ducks have the talent, including a star quarterback and wide receivers, to field a high-powered offense, protecting the quarterback will be essential for their continued success.

Oregon has two non-conference games to refine its performance before entering Big Ten play. The Ducks will host Boise State this week and travel to Oregon State next week. These matchups will be crucial for Oregon to build momentum and maintain their College Football Playoff aspirations.

Texas A&M and Notre Dame

In their season opener, Texas A&M faced a tough challenge against Notre Dame. While the Aggies' defense initially held strong, the Fighting Irish ultimately pulled away in the fourth quarter. Mike Elko's debut as Texas A&M's head coach did not result in a victory.

Texas A&M's offense struggled to generate momentum against Notre Dame, accumulating 246 total yards, including just 100 passing yards. Quarterback Conner Weigman completed only 12 of 30 passes with two interceptions. Coach Mike Elko will need to evaluate the offensive performance and make necessary adjustments to help Weigman reach his full potential and ensure a successful start to the Elko era.

Texas A&M will face a non-conference FCS opponent this week before traveling to Gainesville to play Florida. While it's still early in Mike Elko's tenure, his ability to make effective in-season adjustments will be crucial for the Aggies' success. 

Notre Dame's victory over Texas A&M was characterized by a balanced and efficient performance, rather than explosive plays. Key turnovers and timely runs proved decisive for the Irish. Despite a relatively modest yardage total, Notre Dame's ability to execute when needed showcased their potential as a College Football Playoff contender. With a favorable remaining schedule, including matchups against Louisville, Georgia Tech, Florida State, and USC, the Irish appear well-positioned for a successful season with limited losses.

Penn st

Penn State defied expectations with a strong performance on Saturday. The Nittany Lions' victory showcased their ability to compete at a high level and overcome previous challenges.

After years of falling short in the Big Ten championship race, Penn State's offensive improvements under Coach James Franklin have positioned them as a serious contender.

Penn State's road victory over West Virginia showcased a dominant offensive performance, accumulating 457 total yards and scoring 34 points. Quarterback Drew Allar impressed with 216 passing yards and three touchdowns, fulfilling the expectations of fans who have long sought a breakout performance from the offense. The Nittany Lions' defense also contributed to the victory, forcing three turnovers and maintaining their reputation as a formidable unit.

Penn State's impressive performance against West Virginia has set a high standard for the offense. To establish themselves as a top contender in the Big Ten, the Nittany Lions must consistently replicate this level of play. With manageable matchups against Delaware and Maryland, Penn State will have an opportunity to build momentum before facing a significant test against USC. The team's ability to maintain offensive consistency will be a key factor in determining their ultimate success this season.  

LSU & USC 

For the fifth consecutive season, Brian Kelly's Tigers began their campaign with a 0-1 record. In a closely contested matchup against USC, the Trojans emerged victorious with a 27-20 win. The game showcased the quarterback talent of both teams, with USC ultimately securing the victory on a late touchdown drive followed by a game-sealing interception. 

Lincoln Riley secured his first signature win at USC, showcasing the team's improved defensive performance against a talented opponent. While USC's offense has consistently produced points, the defense's recent growth has been a key factor in the team's success.

Holding a high-powered offense like LSU to 20 points is a significant accomplishment.

USC's defense made crucial stops throughout the game, including a goal-line stand and an interception. The Trojans' ability to limit LSU to a 5-for-13 conversion rate on third down was another key factor in their victory. If USC can maintain this level of defensive performance alongside their potent offense, they have a strong chance of competing for the Big Ten championship.

USC will face Utah State this week before a bye week and a crucial matchup against Michigan. A victory over Michigan would significantly enhance USC's College Football Playoff prospects, especially considering their relatively favorable remaining schedule, with only two major challenges against Penn State and Notre Dame. The Trojans' ability to maintain their defensive performance will be a key factor in achieving their championship aspirations.

While LSU has a favorable non-conference schedule, the SEC portion of their schedule presents significant challenges, including matchups against Ole Miss, Alabama, and Oklahoma. Despite the tough competition, LSU possesses the talent to compete at a high level and achieve their goals. A more productive rushing attack and improved defensive performance could be key factors in determining whether the Tigers can contend for a College Football Playoff berth or have an eight-win season.
